The large number of hazardous chemicals in existence makes it impossible for anyone to be an expert on all of them, hence the need for Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Material Safety Data Sheets are required to be made available to all personnel who use/handle hazardous substances in the workplace. It is fundamentally important that anyone who is involved in the transportation, use or storage of hazardous substances is able to read and understand the safety information contained on a Material Safety Data Sheet.
COURSE AIM
The aim of this training course is to enable the participants to:
- Identify critical safety information on a Material Safety Data Sheet
- Accurately interpret this critical safety information, and to
- Further develop their understanding of how they can protect
themselves from harm, injury and illness when dealing with
hazardous substances.
SESSION 1. The Course Introduction
This first session clearly explains the aim of the course and gives an overview of how the course will be conducted. It also includes an icebreaker exercise.
SESSION 2. Material Safety Data Sheets - an Overview This session looks at the structure and format of a Material Safety Data Sheet. The participants will look at the type of information that is covered under each main section of an MSDS. As a result, the participants will be able to identify the critical safety information that they must be aware of prior to handling any hazardous substance, and be able to locate this information on the MSDS. SESSION 3. Accurately Interpreting Critical Safety Information During this session the participants learn about the critical safety information contained on a Material Safety Data Sheet. They are provided with handouts that will assist them to define and understand complex words as well as to decipher toxicological abbreviations and terms. SESSION 4. An Exercise During this session the participants will be applying the course information to complete a few exercises and answer some simple questions. SESSION 5. The Course Review This final session provides feedback to the participants on how they performed during the exercises.
