The inspection, care and storage of slings and slinging accessories is a fundamental component of maintaining lifting equipment in a safe and serviceable condition. Performing these functions however require specific knowledge and skills. This knowledge and skill development is the primary focus of this course.
COURSE AIM
The specific aim of this training course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to:
- Effectively inspect all types of slings in the workplace
- Adequately protect slings that are in use, and
- Appropriately store lifting equipment that is not in service or being
used.
SESSION 1. The Course Introduction
The course introduction clearly explains the aim of this course and the reason why the course is being conducted. The session also looks at the different types of slings that are used in the workplace and familiarises the participants with specific sling terminology.
SESSION 2. The Inspection of Slings (Pre-Use Checks)
This session looks in detail at the pre-use checks that are conducted for chain slings, wire rope slings, synthetic fibre round slings, synthetic fibre web slings, and slinging accessories. It also covers how to determine when a piece of slinging equipment should be removed from service because of unsafe or sub-standard conditions. This session concludes with the participants being involved in a practical exercise on pre-use checks.
SESSION 3. The Inspection of Slings (Planned Inspections)
This session covers the planned inspection requirements for slings and slinging accessories. During this session the participants are provided with a series of planned inspection checklists. These checklists enable the participants to perform a thorough periodic inspection and fulfil the recording requirements for this activity. This session also covers information such as when to do a planned (or periodic) inspection on each type of lifting equipment, what to do in the event you find a fault when conducting an inspection, etc.
SESSION 4. Care and Storage of Lifting Equipment
During this session the participants perform a couple of practical exercises. This session also involves an interesting perception exercise called ‘Look Again!’
SESSION 5. The Course Review and Written Questionnaire
During this final session the participants review all the important information that has been covered in the course. This is followed by a written questionnaire that the trainees are required to do from memory.
